Visa guidance for South African passport holders

On 5 June 2015, the Government of Georgia's visa-exemption list included the Republic of South Africa and allowed listed citizens to visit without a visa for one full year. This does not guarantee entry and it may not cover work, study or residence. Check the current Georgian rules for your purpose of travel before booking and departure.

Passports and supporting documents

Each traveller needs a valid passport and any documents required by Georgia, South Africa, the airline and transit countries. Check passport validity and blank-page requirements for your exact route. If a child is travelling, confirm the current consent and supporting-document rules with the relevant authorities. Keep secure copies separate from the originals and leave a copy of your itinerary with someone you trust.

Travel insurance is required

Georgia currently requires visiting tourists to hold health and accident insurance. Confirm that your policy meets Georgia's current rules for the full trip. For a ski holiday, ask your insurer in writing whether skiing, equipment, mountain rescue, emergency evacuation, medical treatment, cancellation and your existing medical conditions are covered.

Your route may involve a connection, and airline rules can differ between tickets and operating carriers. Work from the confirmed itinerary rather than a general route assumption.

Before you fly

Check the operating airline, connection airports, transit requirements, terminal changes and minimum connection times shown on your ticket. Recheck the schedule before departure and keep essential documents, medication, valuables and one change of clothing in your hand luggage within the airline's rules.

Luggage and ski equipment

Confirm cabin and checked-baggage limits for every flight segment. Skis, snowboards and oversized bags may need advance booking and separate handling. Tell Adventure Georgia if you plan to bring your own equipment so transfer space and practical arrangements can be checked.

Currency and payments

Georgia's national currency is the Georgian lari (GEL). Exchange rates and card charges vary, so check your bank's current fees and the National Bank of Georgia's reference information. Carry more than one way to pay and keep a modest amount of local cash for situations where your preferred card is not accepted.

Mobile connectivity

Ask your South African network about roaming costs before departure. If you plan to use a local SIM or eSIM, check that your phone is unlocked and compatible before buying. Save your itinerary, insurance details, accommodation address and important contacts for offline access.

Electricity and adaptors

Georgia uses European-standard 220–240 V, 50 Hz electricity. Check the input label on every device and bring a plug adaptor that is compatible with your accommodation. A plug adaptor does not convert voltage.

Time zone

Georgia uses UTC+4 and is normally two hours ahead of South Africa. Confirm the local time shown on your final itinerary, especially for airport transfers and calls home.

Language and local customs

Georgian is the country's official language. Learning a greeting and a thank-you is a thoughtful start, and translation tools can help with everyday situations. Follow local signs and instructions, ask before photographing people, dress respectfully at religious sites and treat homes, neighbourhoods and mountain environments with care.

Weather and what to pack

Georgia's weather varies by region, elevation and day. Tbilisi and the mountain resorts can feel very different on the same trip, and no website can guarantee snowfall or operating conditions.

Pack in layers

For winter travel, plan a moisture-managing base layer, a warm mid-layer and a wind- and water-resistant outer layer. Add warm socks, gloves, a hat, sturdy footwear and sun protection. Adjust the list for your dates, activities and the forecast close to departure.

Keep essentials accessible

Pack medication, travel documents, chargers and a small set of warm essentials in your hand luggage within airline limits. Label checked bags and leave room for any equipment or clothing you plan to hire or buy.

Preparing for a ski trip

A first ski holiday is easier when your clothing, cover and expectations are sorted before you arrive.

  1. Share each traveller's age, ski or snowboard experience, clothing sizes and equipment needs with Adventure Georgia.
  2. Confirm in writing whether lift passes, equipment hire, helmets, lessons and transfers are included in your detailed quotation.
  3. Ask your insurer to confirm cover for your planned winter-sport activities and the resort areas on your itinerary.
  4. Bring or arrange proper eye protection, gloves, warm technical layers and ski socks. Avoid relying on ordinary fashion outerwear for a full day on snow.
  5. Check the current resort weather, lift and slope status close to each ski day and follow local safety instructions.

Speak to a qualified health professional about your personal needs in good time. Carry enough prescribed medication for the trip, keep it in appropriate labelled packaging and check any airline, transit or border rules that apply to it. Keep your insurance policy and emergency-assistance details easy to reach.

Travel with practical care

Use the same sensible precautions you would use on any international trip: protect your passport and valuables, use reputable transport, follow weather and resort instructions, and avoid activities beyond your ability or insurance cover. Conditions and risks can change, particularly in mountain areas.
